Santo Domingo, Hispanola 1599
$32.50
From Flemish engraver Theodore De Bry’s great work on America Les Grands Voyages, this plan-view shows an impressive walled cathedral yard at its center, surrounded by fortifications. The incident depicted took place in 1586, during the Anglo-Spanish War, and shows Sir Francis Drake landing troops and marching in formation to mount an attack on the city walls. Nearly a century after its founding on the southern coast of Hispanola [the Dominican Republic], Santo Domingo was the first permanent European settlement in the New World.
Size: 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Black & White, Cover-stock Paper
