This view in Hartman Schedel’s “Liber Cronicarum” – also known as the Nuremberg Chronicle – shows Rome under the papacy of Alexander VI, who was responsible for “restoring” the Castle of St. Angelo, while his successor, Julius II, was primarily preoccupied with the question of demolishing the old St. Peter’s Basilica. The great redevelopment schemes of Sixtus V were nearly a century away.
