We have selected two important French planned towns from Royal Engineer Christophe Tassin’s “Les Plans et Profils des toutes les Principales Villes et Lieux Considerables de France”. Richelieu was planned by Cardinal Richelieu in 1633 as a town to serve the needs of his nearby chateau. Vitry-le-Francois, shown here, dates from 1545 when it was designed by Hieronimo Marino acting under orders of Francis I.
