An offshoot of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, the Denver and Rio Grande line connected Denver to Pikes Peak. Headed by Gen. William J. Palmer, he created the Colorado Springs Company in 1871, named for the nearby mineral springs. This view of the young city looks to Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains.
