Historic Urban Plans

The sites for public and academic use and other open spaces were all part of Austin’s original design of 1839. The plan resulted from public initiative taken by the Republic of Texas, which acquired the site by eminent domain and laid out the town through a special commission authorized by the legislature and approved by President Lamar.
