Historic Urban Plans

The massing of soldiers and ships is displayed in this visual interpretation of Sir Francis Drake’s attack in 1586, with the gridiron town some distance from the fort guarding the harbor entrance. From Theodore De Bry’s great work on America, “Les Grands Voyages”, this plan-view shows the battle as involving hand to hand combat even in the cornfields.
