Historic Urban Plans

Designed in 1699 by Louis XIV’s military engineer and town planner, Sebastien Vauban, this elaborately fortified strongpoint was built on the Rhine. The engraving shows its location near the older town of the same name, which the French evacuated following the Treaty of Ryswick.
