San Jose Date: 1850
Planned in 1777 as the first civil settlement in Spanish California, San Jose remained a small village until the California gold rush. Sherman Day's survey shows the many new streets, squares, and blocks added to accommodate the increased population.

San Jose Date: 1875
This A.L.Bancroft view shows this former Spanish Colonial town at a time of rapid expansion. New surveys had extended the initial plan, trees were aggressively planted and the railroad had come to town in 1864, connecting it to San Francisco, forty-seven miles away. While leisure time activities are characterized by the the baseball game in the foreground, civic and commercial pursuits are evident by the presence of the courthouse, churches and business districts to the left.

San Luis Obispo Date: 1877
Settlement began here in 1772 with the establishment of a Spanish mission. Near the end of Mexican rule in California the town achieved civil status. This view was drawn and published by E.S. Glover.

Sandusky Date: 1883
Major Hector Kilbourn planned this Ohio city in 1818. He incorporated pairs of diagonal streets and open spaces to duplicate the Masonic emblem of an open Bible and the mason's square and compass. These unusual features can be seen in our view of the city from Lake Erie.
