Benicia Date: 1850
Founded in 1847 by Thomas Larkin and Robert Semple on land owned by General Mariano Vallejo, Benicia served briefly as the capital of California. This plan, published in 1850, was used to promote land sales at the time of the California gold rush.

Biltmore Estate Date: 1896
The landscape architectural firm of Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot prepared this guide map of the 8,600 acre property of George Vanderbilt on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina. The French Chateau-inspired house - 250 rooms with pool and bowling alley in the basement - was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and had just been completed when the Olmsted firm received the commission to design the grounds. The landscape plan included the house, gardens, parkland, farms and forests.
