Salem, Oregon Date: 1858
Now the Oregon capital, Salem began in 1841 when missionaries platted the town and sold lots to raise funds for a school. Like the other views by Kuchel & Dresel, this birdseye is ringed by images of important buildings.

H. Wellge's view of the capital of Utah shows the burgeoning growth of this Mormon city. Farmland is being developed for residences and a new electric railway connects the neighborhoods to the city center. The vibrant colors of the original are accurately reproduced.

San Antonio Date: 1767
The first detailed plan to show the capital of Spanish Texas was this colored manuscript survey prepared by Lt. Joseph de Urrutia. The church separated the military and civic plazas where most of the town's buildings could be found. On either side one can see the irrigated farm fields along the west bank of the San Antonio River. Listed below is a similar survey by Urrutia of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The originals of both are in The British Library.

Printed in Germany from a view drawn by Herman Lungkwitz, this lithograph shows the city as seen by a visitor arriving at its outskirts. The border views of the Alamo, the main plaza, and the missions in the vicinity recall the origins of what had been the chief Spanish settlement in Texas. Our slightly reduced, colored facsimile faithfully duplicates the attractive character of this very scarce print.
