Engraved and published during the American Revolution by William Faden, this large chart is a valuable documentation of urban settlement in Rhode Island at the end of the colonial period. Newport at the mouth of the bay and Providence at its head were the largest towns. Many other communities are identified, and the roads, hills, and coast line are depicted in great detail.

Drawing on the experience at Lowell, Abbott Lawrence in 1847 founded the town bearing his name on the Merrimack River, 26 miles northwest of Boston. Three decades later Lawrence was at the height of its prosperity.

In 1769 and 1770 Claude Joseph Sauthier prepared a series of manuscript surveys of the principal towns in North Carolina. Those of New Bern and Edenton are the two most important. Both are reproduced by permission of the trustees of the British Library where the originals are located.

Hundreds of towns are identified on this lovely map of New England and the Hudson Valley. First published in 1765 and revised several times, this version is the first to show Vermont as a separate state. An insert of Boston Harbor with the nearby towns picked out in red adds to its beauty.
