Colonel William Light planned the capital of South Australia in 1836 in two sections, each surrounded by a permanent common or greenbelt, with rectangular farm tracts beyond. John Arrowsmith produced this map to accompany the 1841 House of Commons Report from the Select ommittee on South Australia.

Felton Matthew, the government's chief surveyor, produced this elaborate design for New Zealand's first capital. This printed version appeared in England only one year after the founding of the city.

This plan is similar in size and identical in format to that of Auckland. The New Zealand Company, which laid out the town, chose a more conventional design than Mathew used for Auckland.
