This manuscript from the Simcoe Papers in the collections of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation shows the main features of the Virginia capital planned by Governor Francis Nicholson in 1699. The Governor’s Palace, the College of William and Mary, and the Capitol provided the three principal architectural elements of its axial design.
