Founded by the Governor of French Louisiana Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1710 at the mouth of the Mobile River, the city came under English control in 1763 as a result of the Treaty of Paris. Philip Pittman’s drawing shows the linear gridiron pattern used in many of the French communities in North America.
