The landscape architectural firm of Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot prepared this guide map of the 8,600 acre property of George Vanderbilt on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina. The French Chateau-inspired house – 250 rooms with pool and bowling alley in the basement – was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and had just been completed when the Olmsted firm received the commission to design the grounds. The landscape plan included the house, gardens, parkland, farms and forests.
